GURGAON: A Delhi-based man has been arrested for allegedly strangling his wife in a moving car on the Gurgaon-Faridabad road on Monday night.
After she fell unconscious, the accused had rushed her to AIIMS hospital, where she died on Tuesday. The husband had fled from AIIMS admitting her there. The victim's family has alleged dowry as the reason behind the murder and Gurgaon police have registered a case.
According to the police, the accused Mohit, a resident of Jaunapur village in Delhi, bordering Gurgaon had tied the knot with Archana of Sahjawas village in Bhondsi police station on February 15, 2009. Though Mohit is a professional driver, locals said he was jobless for quite some time.
"The family members of the deceased have alleged that the accused had demanded two cars as dowry, but they could give only one. That had caused the conflict and Mohit used to taunt her," said a senior police officer.
Mohit and Archana had left to attend a marriage party in Sahjawas on Sunday. The next night when they were returning home in a Maruti 800 the accused allegedly strangled Archana. There are two versions of what happened thereafter. A senior police officer investigating the case said that as Archana fell unconscious, Mohit drove straight to his village out of fear. There his family members called a local physician, who advised them to take her to AIIMS without any delay. But to avoid being caught Mohit fled from the hospital minutes after admitting his unconscious wife.
On Tuesday, Archna's family received the information about her passing. Later, the family lodged a case of dowry death with the Sector-56 police station. "We have arrested the accused and are investigating the case," said Krishna Murari, ACP (Sadar).
Police were also looking into all aspects of the case considering the manner in which Mohit had rushed home with his wife and earlier having allegedly strangled her near Ghata village.
